Rollaway bed
A small room or home and in need of more living space? Then there is now ROLL, a bed that rolls into a wooden box at the push of a button.
Eureka is the rubric for ‘product designs for tomorrow’ in De Ingenieur.
Bed rolls itself up
Living in a small studio or flat often comes at the expense of comfort. A large bed takes up much of the available space, which is often also in use as a living room or workplace. Current solutions for folding beds are far from perfect, Croatian designer Luka Buljan found. Folding beds take up an entire wall and sofa beds are clunky and rarely really comfortable.
Buljan, who himself wanted an extra bed in his study, came up with a new solution: a rollaway bed that, at the push of a button, rolls itself up into a compact wooden cupboard in about 30 seconds. That cupboard can also serve as a bench, TV cabinet or a place for plants or books.
Compact living
His inspiration for ROLL, as the roll-up bed is called, came from the way a new mattress is shipped: rolled up, compressed and vacuum-packed. The only question was: can a mattress handle that process on a daily basis?
The designer has since spent a year rolling the mattress in and out frequently to answer yes to that question. It also managed to translate the principle of industrial mattress rolling machines into an electrically driven rolling mechanism that rolls up the mattress evenly. The electric motor is quiet and energy-efficient and can operate via mains power as well as rechargeable batteries.
Modular design
ROLL is completely modular in design. For optimal sleeping comfort, the mattress is composed of a supportive polyurethane foam layer and a layer of memory foam to improve pressure distribution.
ROLL is available in six colours and two sizes: 90 and 160 centimetres. The bed is delivered fully assembled. ROLL was available at a discount on Kickstarter. The expected retail price will soon be around fourteen hundred euros.
